Toilets for Schools Global Grant

A new Global Grant is underway in the Nashik Region, Maharashtra, in partnership with the Host Rotary Club of Nasik Road. This project will provide toilet and handwashing facilities for five rural schools — improving sanitation, preventing disease, and helping adolescent girls stay in school.

With a total budget of US $77,753, we’re now seeking Rotary District and District Designated Funding pledges, along with individual donations, to bring this important project to life.

A promise made seven years ago in Piplantri, Rajasthan, is about to be fulfilled.

The Rotary Clubs of Udaipur Meera (India) and Box Hill Central (Australia) have secured a US$88,423 Rotary Foundation Global Grant to improve sanitation and education in six schools, directly benefiting 571 students. The project will deliver new toilets, handwashing stations, furniture, sports resources, and classroom repairs—supported by partners and generous donors.

For Box Hill Central’s Mark Balla, the Toilet Warrior, this is deeply personal. Inspired by village leader Shyam Sunder Paliwal’s movement—planting 111 trees for every girl born after losing his daughter—Mark promised Rotary would help rebuild the schools.

Delayed by the pandemic but never forgotten, that promise will soon become reality. In March 2026, Mark and supporters will return to Piplantri to celebrate a brighter, safer future for its children.

EWASH Ethiopia

Building on the success of the Shurmo Project, Operation Toilets, in partnership with International Needs Australia, has launched a three-year Community-Led Total Sanitation & Hygiene (CLTSH) program in the Ezha District, Gurage Zone, Central Ethiopia.

Since beginning in July 2024, the program has already reached schools, students, community leaders, and families — creating lasting change across the region.

You can explore the progress and results in the Project E-WASH 24/25 Annual Report.

Just like in year one, every dollar you donate is matched at least 1:1 via INA’s Australian Government accreditation with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) — doubling your impact and helping us reach even more communities in need.

In partnership with International Needs Australia (INA), this bold two-year project is improving health, gender equity, and access to quality education by enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure in the remote Chaurjahari Municipality, Rukum West, Nepal.

After just one year, the results are already clear — the Project SWAN Annual Report FY24–25 shows strong progress and real impact.

And with 1:1 matching via INA / DFAT, every dollar you give goes twice as far to build healthier, more equitable communities

Delhi Global Grant Number 2

Following the success of our first Global Grant project with our partners in Rotary District 3012 (Delhi and Greater Noida), we embarked on a second Global Grant together—a comprehensive WASH in Schools program reaching some 15 schools.

Alongside the construction and renovation of toilets and handwashing stations, we partnered once again with World Vision to deliver an 18-month WASH Education program. This ensured that every school was equipped not only with safe facilities, but also with the knowledge and practices to safeguard the wellbeing of students long into the future.

With a project budget of US$150,000, and thanks to generous fundraising efforts, this initiative was fully realised—transforming daily life for hundreds of children.

Shurmo Ethiopia Global Grant

In the first half of 2019, we launched an ambitious new project in Ethiopia in partnership with International Needs Australia (INA), The Rotary Foundation and the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa, building on the success of our earlier pilot program. That first initiative had transformed sanitation and hygiene in two small schools, changing the lives of more than 600 students.

This second project went much further. Rolled out across six rural communities—or kebeles as they are known in Ethiopia—it reached around 6,500 students in eight schools. Beyond the classroom, the program extended into surrounding villages through a Community-led Total Sanitation & Hygiene (CLTSH) approach, ultimately improving daily life for some 30,000 people.

Work began with a comprehensive Community Needs Assessment, undertaken with INA in late 2018. With an estimated budget of US$110,000, and thanks to strong fundraising efforts, the project was fully delivered—bringing lasting improvements in health, dignity, and opportunity.
